OS X El Capitan builds on the groundbreaking features and beautiful design introduced in OS X Yosemite, refining the experience and improving performance in lots of little ways that make a big difference.

Will it run on my computer?

El Capitan will work on Macs running OS X Snow Leopard or later:

iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)
Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)

The general minimum requirements call for 2GB of memory, 8GB of available storage, and an Internet connection for some features.

What is new in OS X El Capitan?

El Capitan introduces enhancements to window management, built-in apps and Spotlight search, and makes everyday activities—from launching apps to accessing email—faster and more responsive. Metal, Apple’s breakthrough graphics technology, is integrated into El Capitan, delivering system-wide performance gains and enabling games and pro apps to tap into the full power of Mac graphics processors.

Split View

With Split View, you can use two apps side by side in a full-screen space, so it’s easy to reference websites while writing an email, or use Messages while creating a report. You can even adjust the width of each window to make the most of your display.

Mission Control

A simplified Mission Control spreads all of your windows out in a single layer. Click one to bring it forward. Or drag a window to the top of your screen to access Mission Control and create a new desktop space, take your window full screen, or go full screen with two apps in Split View.

An entirely new Notes app lets you create stylised notes with formatted text, useful checklists, and media-rich content. Add attachments while you work with the Share button in your apps. And quickly scan all the files and links you’ve added to your notes with the Attachments Browser.

Safari in OS X El Capitan has enhancements for users who browse with lots of tabs. With Pinned Sites, you can pin websites to your tab bar and reference them throughout the day. Safari also lets you mute unwanted website audio right from the Smart Search field.

New features make it easier to manage your inbox with a swipe, work in full screen, and search for messages. Mail even suggests new contacts and events. And an improved IMAP engine brings your most recent emails to your Mailbox up to 2 times faster.

Photos now supports third-party extensions that let you access editing tools from your favorite developers, directly in the app. It’s also easier to name, organize, and sort your photos. And now you can get to your photos faster thanks to improved launch performance for large libraries.

Improved fonts

The new system font in El Capitan brings a fresh, readable, and consistent look across your Apple devices. Chinese users will enjoy a new system font designed for maximum legibility. And new Japanese fonts give you more options to customize your documents.

Performance has been tuned across the system in El Capitan, making many of the things you do every day faster and more responsive. From launching and switching between apps to accessing email and opening PDFs, El Capitan makes your Mac feel fluid and more responsive.
