Technology often gets a bad rep when it comes to searching for stress-causing culprits. And it may be true. We can never be without our phones, iPads or laptops. But it’s not the devices that are causing the stress, is it? It’s what we do with them that makes us want to pull our hair out, or yell profanities at the top of our voices.
So how do we get smart about this, and turn what should be a major stress causer in our lives to our new “ZEN”? We have a few ideas for you to try out:
1. Check in with yourself using mindfulness and stress relief apps
The great thing about apps on your iPhone is that you can take them and use them wherever you go. We found a couple of apps that are going to help you stay calm and focused.
HEADSPACE. This is meditation made simple. Each session is a guided one, suitable for all levels. This app is designed to help improve your focus, exercise mindful awareness, relieve anxiety and reduce stress.
WORRY WATCH lets you delve into the thought processes that lead us down a path of unjustified stress. It has a logbook for you to track your worries, including what you thought might happen and how the situation actually turned out. As you add to your app, you can monitor trends and learn from your patterns of worry and anxiety.
The BREATHE APP that comes standard on your Apple Watch guides you through a series of deep breaths, and will remind you to take time to breathe every day. Choose how long you want to breathe, then let the animation and gentle taps help you focus. This app is designed to assist with mindfulness, meditation and stress reduction.
2. Boost your creativity with tech
There’s nothing quite like getting your creative juices flowing to help detour you from everyday stresses. The iPad Pro and Apple Pencil are the perfect tools for just that. Try these apps to help you unwind:
PROCREATE is a complete artist’s toolbox to help you create beautiful sketches, inspiring paintings, and stunning illustrations anywhere you are. Procreate features ground-breaking canvas resolution, 128 incredible brushes, advanced layer system, and more.
PIGMENT is the ultimate stress reliever on the go! Take a break and relax with this unique colouring book app that lets you colour like you would on paper. Choose from the largest collection of hand curated, professionally drawn illustrations, 21 different kinds of pencils, markers and brushes, and an unlimited number of colours to choose from.
3. Make meaningful connections
Constant connectivity doesn’t have to leave you feeling disconnected — tech can be used to connect in meaningful ways with our own interests, as well as with friends, family and colleagues. One study even found that social media makes teens more aware of the needs of others. Just to be clear, social media interaction shouldn’t replace in-person communication.
So let’s try not focus on the the negatives associated with tech and stress, but rather on the positive, more productive opportunities that goes along with technology.
